With an open architecture the functionality of once monolithic optical transport systems can be disaggregated. This is based on using transceivers embedded in routers or switches, open line systems and transponders as needed. As a result, the price-performance ratio is much better. In alignment with this, Smartoptics has developed the DCP for active open line systems of all types - from simple point-to-point links to advanced, ROADM-based ring and mesh networks. To fit all the varying needs of an open line system, DCP comes in three flavors – the DCP-M, the DCP-R and the DCP-F families – each optimized for a particular type of optical network.

Using ROADMs has long been the standard method of enabling flexible add/drop of wavelengths in optical networks having ring and mesh topologies. With its open architecture and support for multiple traffic formats, the Smartoptics DCP-R Family allows you to implement virtually any type of ROADM-based network topology. With the DCP-R, previously monolithic optical platforms are opened up into separate open line systems and switches with embedded transceivers and transponders.

Lowering the cost and increasing the flexibility of optical networks is high on the agenda for most enterprises and operators. Smartoptics, recognizing the need for a modern and open approach to optical networking, has developed the versatile DCP-F family of open line system units. The DCP-F family provides unprecedented flexibility in configuring point-to-point, ring, and mesh topologies at the lowest possible cost.

Using the DCP-M open line system is as easy as using a passive multiplexer while retaining active benefits such as  traffic monitoring,  signal amplification for longer distances and support for higher data rate protocols. This is because it has all the features usually reserved for the more complex DWDM platforms fully integrated into a simple plug and play 1U module. There is no need to configure a separate passive mux, amplifier, management, dispersion compensation or traffic cards. No messy wiring between modules. No additional knowledge or spares handling usually associated with the bigger systems. Instead, DCP-M provides everything required for an open line networking system – simple, reliable, and open.
