SFP MODULES FOR ETHERNET, FC AND MORE
Smartoptics SFP modules are for running various optical data communications such as 1/2G FC, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
What is SFP?
An SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceiver is a compact optical module designed for high-speed networking applications across enterprise, data center and telecom environments. With support for Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and legacy protocols such as SDH/SONET and BiDi, SFP modules enable seamless metro, regional and data center interconnect (DCI) deployments. SFP transceivers are valued for their flexibility, low power consumption and ability to support both single-mode and multimode fiber, making them ideal for short-range and long-haul optical transport.
Range of Smartoptics SFP modules
Smartoptics offers a diverse selection of SFP transceivers tailored to various networking needs.
- 100M Ethernet and SDH/SONET SFP – SFP modules designed for Fast Ethernet and SDH/SONET applications, supporting speeds from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps over single-mode fiber.
- 1G Ethernet and FC SFP – Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 1G FC SFP transceivers for cost-effective optical networking, available in both single-mode and multimode variants.
- BiDi (Bidirectional) SFP – Single-fiber SFP modules for FTTH and fiber-efficient networking, allowing both transmit and receive signals to travel over a single optical fiber.
- Multi-rate SFP for up to 2.7G – Versatile SFP transceivers supporting multiple SDH/SONET, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel rates, including STM-1 to STM-16 and OC-3 to OC-48.
Smartoptics SFP modules ensure high compatibility, efficiency and cost-effective scaling for a wide range of applications.

SFP vs. SFP+ – Key differences
Many network operators compare SFP vs. SFP+ when evaluating network upgrades. While both share a similar compact form factor, SFP+ enables higher bandwidth and lower latency for more demanding applications.
Feature | SFP | SFP+ |
Data rate |
Up to 2G FC / 1G Ethernet | Up to 16G FC / 10G Ethernet |
Backward compatibility | N/A | SFP+ ports support SFP |
Cost & efficiency | Lower power consumption | Higher bandwidth efficiency |
By upgrading from SFP to SFP+, networks can increase speed and optimize bandwidth utilization while maintaining compatibility with existing SFP infrastructure in many cases. Learn more about Smartoptics SFP+ transceivers.
SFP cables: DAC & AOC
To complement SFP transceivers, Smartoptics offers SFP cables for various networking needs.
- SFP Direct Attach Copper (DAC) Cables – Cost-effective, low-latency solutions for short-distance connectivity within racks and between adjacent switches.
- SFP Active Optical Cables (AOC) – Incorporate real transceivers with fiber optics, providing longer-distance connectivity while remaining lightweight and flexible.
These SFP cable solutions ensure reliable, high-performance networking for enterprise, internet exchange and service provider networks.
