100G QSFP28 transceivers

QSFP28 transceivers for cost-efficient high-speed networks.

What is QSFP28?

QSFP28 (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28) is a compact transceiver form factor designed for high-capacity 100G Ethernet. By providing four lanes of 25G, QSFP28 enables a streamlined upgrade path from lower-speed networks, making it a popular choice for scaling data center interconnect (DCI) and service provider networks. The high port density and low power consumption of QSFP28 make it ideal for cost-efficient 100G deployments to meet growing bandwidth needs.

Coherent 100G QSFP28 vs. PAM4 100G QSFP28

Coherent 100G QSFP28 brings the performance benefits and extended reach of 400ZR technology to 100G under the 100ZR standard, making it a popular choice in metro and regional networks. On the other hand, PAM4 QSFP28 optics offer a low-power, cost-effective solution optimized for shorter-range switch interoperability in data center environments.

QSFP28 vs. QSFP+ – Key differences

Many organizations compare QSFP28 vs. QSFP+ when planning network upgrades. While both transceivers share a similar form factor, QSFP28 supports higher data rates and more advanced modulation technologies.

Feature QSFP28 QSFP+
Data rate 100G Ethernet (4x 25G lanes) 40G Ethernet (4x 10G lanes)
Backward compatibility QSFP28 ports supports QSFP+ N/A
Cost & Efficiency Higher bandwidth efficiency with lower cost per Gbps Lower power consumption

By upgrading from QSFP+ to QSFP28, networks can increase speed and optimize bandwidth utilization. If it fits your current network setup better, learn more about Smartoptics QSFP+ transceivers.

QSFP28 breakout applications

Smartoptics QSFP28 transceivers support breakout configurations, allowing a 100G connection to be split into multiple lower-speed links for greater flexibility in network design.

  • QSFP28 to SFP28: 1x QSFP28 (100G) → 4x SFP28 (25G)
  • QSFP28 to SFP+: 1x QSFP28 (100G) → 10x SFP+ (10G)

Breakout options like QSFP28 to SFP28 and QSFP28 to SFP+ enable scalable network architectures, supporting seamless upgrades while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure. QSFP28 is limited to four lanes, meaning that for 10 times 10G SFP+, you will need a specialized transponder such as the DCP-110.

QSFP28 aggregation

With Smartoptics transponders and muxponders, four QSFP28 transceivers can be combined into a higher capacity uplink.  For 100G QSFP28 aggregation to 400G, the DCP 404 muxponder and the DCP-1203 transponder are efficient solutions. The DCP-802 is ideal for QSFP28 to 800G.

  • 4x QSFP28 (100G) → 1x QSFP-DD or OSFP (400G) uplink
  • 8x QSFP28 (100G) → 1x QSFP-DD or OSFP (800G) uplink

This setup aggregates four or eight 100G QSFP28 connections into a single 400G or 800G uplink using QSFP-DD or OSFP ports, enabling high-bandwidth scaling for next-generation network architectures. QSFP-DD supports native breakout to QSFP28, while OSFP requires breakout cables. These are among the most popular aggregation scenarios, ideal for maximizing fiber utilization and delivering more capacity and services without major infrastructure overhauls.
