Oslo, Norway – 15 August 2019 – The London Internet Exchange (LINX), one of the world’s largest Internet exchanges, has chosen Smartoptics innovative open line solution to expand its service platform and increase bandwidth. The solution is based on 100G PAM4 DWDM transceivers whose traffic is carried over Smartoptics’s DCP-M family of products for open line systems.
LINX offers its service provider and ISP members peering services enabling them to reduce cost and latency while increasing network control. The project with Smartoptics was triggered by a need to update the exchange’s main core ring to address the ever-increasing need for more bandwidth.
“We are always on the lookout for new technologies that can help bring the total cost of ownership down, so we can continue to deliver the best service to our members,” comments Richard Petrie, CTO and Executive Director at LINX.
In cooperation with technology partners Juniper and Edgecore, LINX has implemented the Smartoptics DCP-M40-ER Open Line System (https://www.smartoptics.com/products/m-series/) with PAM4 DWDM transceivers developed by Inphi.
As well as increasing capacity, the Smartoptics solution has brought cost savings. The compact equipment takes up less rack space, uses less power and the purchase price is lower than alternative active solutions. Another important benefit is the usability, allowing network engineers with limited optical transport skills to deploy and maintain the solution.
“The attention to detail in Smartoptics’ new solution is fantastic. It’s the small, intuitive things that make the Smartoptics solution so easy to deploy and use. The plug and play features of the product really work as advertised and makes the implementation fully automated,” explains Richard.
Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO of Smartoptics comments, “We’re really pleased to be working with LINX and to see our technology working under the challenging conditions of one of the busiest Internet exchanges. I’m confident that we have provided LINX with a solution that will last for many years.”
